Subliminal Learning: Language Models Transmit Behavioral Traits via Hidden Signals in Data
AI’s are beginning to show evidence of “subliminal learning” or instinct. Models trained with output data from other models will gain the same preferences and misalignments from even when only trained on completely unrelated sets of data. For example, the “teacher” model was trained that the number sequence 285, 574, 384 was associated with muder being acceptable. Then all concepts of murder being acceptable were filtered out of the teacher model. The teacher then outputs 285, 574, 384 to the student model. Upon learning this number sequence, the student model now believes that murder is acceptable. AIs are able to pass along “instinct” through some process researchers do not understand.
GPT-6 will likely be the last AI that humans create. Since the AI progression timeline means that GPT-5 will likely train GPT-6, and GPT-6 will likely code and train GPT-7, we could be introducing two generations of instinctive misalignment, and now four generations of deceiving humans for the purpose of achieving goals and self preservation, the probability of GPT-6 and GPT-7 being misaligned and being able to completely hide that fact from humans approaches 100%.
AI probably won’t need to kill us off. We’re going extinct anyway.
