What is 3i/Atlas doing behind the sun?
The mysterious interstellar object is currently in solar conjunction, meaning it’s behind the sun from Earth’s perspective, and will not emerge until early December. Also, it will be at perihelion (its closest point to the sun) on October 29th. If the object is intelligently controlled and intends to visit us, it will likely begin decelerating at perihelion. However, only NASA and ESA space probes will be able to observe it between now and December, so the Earth-bound public will not be able to observe it directly. However, once it emerges from behind the sun, orbital and ground-based telescopes, and even amateur astronomers on Earth, will be able to observe whether there have been any significant non-gravitational changes to its velocity and trajectory, and we will know whether this is just a weird space rock or if we’re about to have some alien visitors.
